“The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Vogt Vineyard is one of the more distinctive wines in the range. Graphite, smoke, grilled herbs, lavender, menthol and inky blue/purplish fruit abound in this potent, muscular Cabernet. Even with all of its size, the 2016 is vivid and finely sketched. Moreover, it is one of the more compelling wines in this range.” - Antonio Galloni
“This is a tight-grained, grippy and complex red wine, savory in leather, tobacco and current. The midpalate softens into a rich, luxurious explosion of black cherry, cocoa powder and currant. It stands to develop more substantially over time; enjoy best from 2026–2031.” - Virginie Boone
“Youthfully raw, brimming with wild, zesty blackberry, black currant and blueberry fruit flavors, lined with briar and tar notes and framed by singed alder and juniper details through the rich finish. A textbook Howell Mountain Cabernet. Best from 2021 through 2032.” - James Molesworth
Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.
A dry January was followed by a wet February, while temperatures remained mild. Bud break was early but slowed as April arrived with consistent showers. The growing season proceeded at a leisurely pace, allowing fruit to reach full maturity with balanced acid and complex layers of flavor.
Pauli Vineyard is located on Howell Mountain. The 15-acre vineyard has volcanic-based soils that are restrictive and thus foster grapes of great intensity and structure. Pauli Vineyard first appeared in the Private Reserve blend at the 2009 vintage. Pauli Cabernet shows a luscious fruit core from the outset, accentuated by ripe tannins.
