After hand harvesting, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery. The grapes were destemmed and cold soaked 5 days to gently ease color and flavor. During the roughly 12-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels giving the final wine softened tannins and beautiful toasty barrel notes.

The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even, and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 wines are of very high quality with plenty of concentrated flavors, color, and excellent acidity.
Planted in the early 1900s, Ranch No. 1 is a 128-acre property in the heart of Rutherford encompassing the original Georges de Latour Estate. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot on the Rutherford bench with a variety of alluvial soils that foster exceptional quality in Bordeaux-style varietals. The well-draining gravel loam soils allow for deep rooting and the development of grapes with complex flavors.
